Chapter History

Yadkin River Patriots Chapter, NSDAR, was organized by 45 ladies on September 26, 1919, at the home of Mrs. John Solomon Efird, in Albemarle, North Carolina. Most of the early members were descendants of Patriots of Stanly and Montgomery Counties, who established their homes along the courses of the Yadkin River, and in whose honor the chapter was named. Miss Effie Turner, a native of Norwood, and a young bookkeeper for one of the Albemarle cotton mills, was selected as the Organizing Regent. Mrs. Edith Josephine Whitley was selected as the Co-Regent, with Miss Mary Mabry, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Elizabeth Parker Reynolds, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs. Annie R. Brightwell, Registrar; Mrs. Mattie Anderson Brown, Historian; Mrs. Margaret Caldwell Harris, Chaplain; and Miss Pattie McCain, Treasurer.

Among the 45 accomplished charter members were nine teachers, two artists, one attorney, two women who owned and operated a hotel. In total, 16 members worked in jobs outside the home. Special indeed was the recognition that their own Janie Spencer Truett’s grandmother was a “real daughter” of an American Revolutionary War Patriot.

More than a century later, the spirit and vision of these remarkable women continues. Yadkin River Patriots Chapter, NSDAR, has grown to over 100 members whose love of God, Home and Country resonates in service to our communities, schools, veterans, and the preservation of our Nation’s unique history.

Meetings

Our chapter meets in the months from September through May. A typical meeting includes social time, a short program, and a business meeting. We have programs and events featuring special presenters, service activities, and commemorations. Throughout the year we support our community, state and country with acts of service large and small.

We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand the DAR organization and especially our chapter. You will learn more about our chapter by going to the What We Do webpage to read about some of the things that we do throughout the year.
